Sexy Poetry!

For one of my classes I am reading a book of poetry called “Country Between Us” by a very skilled poet named Carolyn Forche. She can turn a phase, believe me that. Of Americans she says:

“It is/that you were born to an island of greed/and grace where you have this sense/of yourself as apart from others.”

So obviously she’s not a rah-rah-rah happy-happy-times poet, but she’s good at what she does.

What’s interesting about her then, is what she does. What she does is write poetry that’s basically a kind of tragedy porn. She writes about Eastern Europe after WWII and it feels exactly gray enough. When she writes about the civil war in El Salvador what she ends up producing is some of the most fearful and disturbing lines I’ve ever read about oppression and torture, or just generally:

“Tell them about the razor, the live wire,/dry ice and concrete, grey rats and above all/who fucked her, how many times and when./Tell them about retaliation: Jose lying/on the flat bed truck, waving his stumps/in your face, his hands cut off by his/captors and thrown to the many acres/of cotton, lost, still and holding/the last few lumps of leeched earth.”

She also goes overboard from time to time. She has a poem called “Endurance” and while it doesn’t suck, it seems to deal with how hard it is for her to adjust to generally civil American life after having been in these awful and war torn places, but she doesn’t seem to be able to disengage from her muse-of-human-suffering voice when she talks about coming back from Germany to New York and then Virginia. She says:

“the Roanoke valley/where mountains hold the breath/of the dead between them”

And that’s when I was all like, “Lady, calm the fuck down. I’ve seen those mountains and they’re goddamn gorgeous.”

But the only reason I’m wasting your time with all of this, is this: despite her passion for poetry that makes me want to cram a phillips head screwdriver through my face, she wrote a few massively sexy lines and I think that she probably doesn’t even know it because they’re sandwiched in between a couple stanzas that are DEEP and MEANINGFUL and TRAGIC and STUFF.

In academia I would get my ass kicked for cherry picking lines like this, but I don’t actually care. Here are a few lines from a poem called, “Photography of My Room”. These are the sexy lines and the only sexy lines in the poem:

“In the notebooks you will find/those places: the damp inner thighs,/the delicate rash left by kisses,/fingers on the tongue, a swallow/of brandy, a fire.”

How hot is that? That’s some Fifty Shades of Grey stuff, but with better words!

I’m not going to talk anymore. I just want you to have some time to read those lies again.

Apartment.

I love the apartment I live in right now because I think this is the first time I have lived alone and been able to build a home that feels like me. It looks the way I want it to and it feels the way I want it too. And I spent a lot of time thinking about those things.

If you’ve never been here (call me and come over and I’ll make you dinner!), it is minimal and sparse but not empty. It is clean but not austere. It is covered in books, but those books all fit into simple black square bookcases. There is a thing I remember reading in an article once about the plethora of minimalist restaurants popping up (I won’t bother with context other than that):

Ryan told Louie, “People love restaurants because the kitchens are practical and simple but even better is the sense of plenty; lots of wine, lots of candles.”

That is what I have tried to engineer here. That feeling of plenty.

I tell you all this because I think that when my lease is up I will have to move and/or find a roommate(s), which will mean that this apartment I love so much will go away. That makes me sad. Sad face.

What will make me happy though is when you email me and tell me that you want to come over for dinner. Most of you reading this have actually met me, so it won’t be weird. But South Korean Guy (yeah I know about you) and come over for dinner too.

Come to Dinner.

Seriously though, let’s have dinner! I want to have dinner parties! I have black turtlenecks I never get to wear! LA is so diffuse though that even when you meet people and make friends, they often turn out to be from too far away to be close friends. This is why geography is so interesting/important.

It Is My Blog And I Can Post Whatever I Want.

This is a real masters thesis in the real world.

This is a real person and not a media image. But also a media image. But also a person. I'm so confused. And aroused?

I wish that I looked this good in this post-shower, towel-off state.
I will never look this good through. For obvious reasons.
I keep taking pictures of myself in a towel though, just in case I end up looking good by accident.

My cat nearly killed my plant today. This is what I came home to.

Stuff I Should Come Clean About.

Things I totally want to write about but which I probably won’t ever get around to writing about:

- Why I like running out of things.
- Why I wish I could get into these vampire shows.
- How I am totally envious/angry about acquaintances who are active travelers in the world.
- How squirrels are way better than TV.
- How I pick my toothpaste.
- What I think I have been missing at the Olympics by not having cable.
- Why I think I could (eventually) be good at the biathlon.
- Did you ever think about how weird it is that the mouse and the keyboard function very differently?
- That time that it was more fun to hang out and talk with that stripper than it was to ask her to be all striper-y?
- How I would like to start living the way a grown-up would live.
