Just a simple little piece of writing.

Today I:
made a comic strip people
like using

nothing but my brain at 5am.
Did yoga using nothing
but this old body, these old limbs.

Worked and worked work for
eleven hours on a Monday
even though no

one made me even
though I know
no one will remember

today.
Ran a 5k I didn’t even mean to,
but the light was a nice purple,

the dirt mostly sand and
I didn’t see
another person for forty-five minutes.

Made a simple
dinner that wasn’t even sad,
only remarkably plain,

and today I wrote
this and even though
it ‘s no good,

I still made it
today.

Tepid.

I can feel already that I am going to run out of energy before the week is up. My body has been telling me all day that it is Thursday and I keep telling my body, “No, you are incorrect, it is only Wednesday.”

This is not a complaint, this running out of energy thing. My life right now is probably way easier than yours. I’m on summer break from school, so I wake up, walk to work, work, walk back from work, work out, eat dinner, read, and go to sleep. That has been my week so far, this week anyway. I know it sounds boring to you (what with your jetsetting international jewel-thief lifestyle) but I needed some boring in my life lately. So I am happy. ish.

But my body is tired. I have been using the little gym here in my apartment complex and I have not been moderating myself well, so I think I am working my body too hard, which is why I feel so tired. Also, I have been trying to eat “fruit” and “vegetables” instead of salted mixed nuts and white wine. I do not think my body is very happy about this sudden and drastic change.

Also - as long as I am complaining - the summer has finally started to settle like a tepid bowl of soup on greater Los Angeles and so lately when I sit down here at my kitchen table to write, my forearms kind of stick to the table in a way that is both gross and annoying. I do not like it. I do not like it at all. I will keep you updated on this situation as it develops.

Things I Did(n't) Do Today.

Things I did today:

- Laundry.
- Looked for an onion.
- Failed to find an onion.
- Asked the guy at Office Max to just give me some tape.
- Thought about showering.

Things I did not do today:

- Shower.
- Make food.
- Download the syllabuses (syllabi?) for my classes.
- Pay any of my bills.
- Email that professor I need to email.
- Buy a vacuum.
- Research post-grad programs.
- Submit stories out for publication.
- Go to the gym.
- Run.
- Call my mother.
- Make a meaningful effort to become a better person.
- Go to bed at a reasonable hour.
- Tell all of the people in my life who I love, that I love them.
- Work on that half-written screenplay I have been working on for four years.
- Make even the smallest amount of progress toward the sort of life that it would be respectable for a man my age to be living at this particular point.
- Shave.

The kind of day it has been.

The kind of day it has been: for reasons passing understanding, today I wore three completely different outfits, one for each of the three completely different parts of my day. This was not by design at all. Weirdly, a girl I know who I virtually never see, saw me - entirely randomly - during each of the three separate parts of my day and in each of my different outfits. If she noticed, she didn’t say anything and I’m happy she didn’t because I would not have had any reasonable explanations for any of the costume changes. Sometimes a guy just wants to change clothes, you know?
